Gap Inc. and Enel Green Power: Fashion and Sustainability
As part of its sustainability initiatives, Gap Inc. has set ambitious goals to achieve emissions reductions and 100% renewable energy across its operations: Enel Green Power’s Aurora wind farm in North Dakota is playing an important role.
Gap Inc. is designing new programs and partnering with others to positively impact the industry as part of its sustainable strategy. As a member of the Ceres Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP) network, Gap Inc. aims to create opportunities for people and communities around the world and is set to support its stores, headquarters and distribution centers globally with 100% renewable energy by 2030. Gap Inc. also joined the We Mean Business coalition to improve resiliency in its operations and supply chains.
In 2019, Gap Inc. took a bold step towards reaching its clean energy goal when it announced a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Enel Green Power. With this VPPA, Gap Inc. will purchase the electricity equivalent of a 90 MW portion of Enel Green Power’s Aurora wind farm each year. The wind energy supplied to Gap Inc. is enough to power over 1,500 of its retail stores across four brands: that’s the equivalent of around 50% of the electricity needs of the more than 3,300 stores operated by Gap Inc. worldwide. It supported Gap Inc. in reaching its 2020 goal of reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.
